Joanie is originally from Hampton, Virginia and graduated from Old Dominion University. She has been in aquatics her whole life starting at 6 years old when she first started swimming for a summer league team. At age 9 she started swimming year round and made the YMCA national cut at age 10. At 13 years old, with Dudley Duncan (Quest’s founder) as her coach, she made her first Junior National in 200 Breast. Joanie continued to swim through high school into college and shows no signs of slowing down. She spent 15 years as a US Swimming coach in the Tidewater area, Richmond and Kansas before spending the last 6 years teaching swim lessons. On the rare occasion Joanie is dry, she is either reading or spending time with her grandson.
